Relics of Change

In the ancient valleys that cut across Jordan’s western plateau, descending gradually toward the lowest point on Earth’s land, scars of a delicate dance between time and the elements are etched into walls of layered sediment.

The fissures and ridges, which have been stained by mineral-rich waters that trickle by, provide a roadmap into the past — to bygone days when entire swaths of the planet were submerged with water, when species that have long since disappeared roamed freely and monumental climate events reshaped ecosystems for millennia to come.

Today, similar changes are brewing once again, bolstered by humanity’s disregard for its impact on the environment.

When the turbulence caused by climate change has run its course, how will the scars of this moment appear on the surfaces that endure?
